Few words about Nepal

Nepal is situated between India and China with the total area of 147,181 Sq. Kilometers and an average length is 885 Km east to west. It lies between 26 o 12' and 30 o 27' north latitude and 80 o 04' and 88 o 12' east longitude. Topography of Nepal varies from the worlds' deepest gorge "Kali-Gandaki" to the highest point on the earth Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest), 8,848 meters above the sea level.

· Total Population:- 23.4 million people (Source: National population census report 2001).

· 61 ethnic groups and 70 spoken languages.

· The political system:- Multiparty Democracy with Constitutional Monarchism after the restoration of the Democracy in the country in 1990.

· Administrative Division:- Five development region, 14 zones, 75 districts, 58 Municipality including One Metropolitan and Three sub-metropolitans city, 3913 Village Development Committees. ·

· Population growth rate:- 2.1% per annum.

· Literacy rate: 57 (Women : 34)

No. of students completed SLC in 2004: 43 including Female: 18, (First division: 24)

There is a great challenge to the nation to eliminate the massive poverty in the country and provide basic needs to the people.

All over the country only 20% people are using transportation facilities (road/air). Mostly, the hilly areas of the country are connected by air transport, but these are not regularly operated in all seasons. Government has already been providing telephone services to 73-district head -quarters, and other accessible places of the districts, and only 15% people are using electricity facilities (most of them are in urban areas). Only 7% people are getting clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.
